Protect Your Holiday Gifts: Essential Insurance Tips

The holidays are a time for generosity, but new gifts, jewelry, electronics, and other valuables can create gaps in your homeowners or renters insurance coverage. Taking a few simple steps now can ensure your new belongings are protected in the new year.

Know Your Policy Limits.. Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies have sublimits for certain categories of personal property. Jewelry, for example, is often limited to $1,500 or $2,500 in a typical policy, regardless of the total personal property coverage limit. Electronics may have similar caps.

Schedule High-Value Items.. If you receive an engagement ring, expensive watch, fine art, or other high-value items, consider scheduling those items on your policy as a floater or endorsement. Scheduled items are covered for their appraised value with no deductible and often cover accidental loss — something not covered under standard policies.

Document Your New Gifts.. Take photos of new electronics, note serial numbers, and keep receipts or packaging. If you ever need to file a claim, thorough documentation speeds up the process and ensures you're compensated fairly.

Update Your Home Inventory.. The holidays are a natural time to walk through your home and update your personal property inventory. A home inventory — photos, descriptions, and estimated values — is invaluable after a fire, theft, or other loss. Store it somewhere other than your home, such as a cloud service or safe deposit box.

Watch Out for Package Theft.. Porch piracy is a growing problem during the holiday season. While some homeowners policies cover theft of packages from your property, coverage varies. Ask your agent whether your policy covers stolen packages and whether a police report is required to file a claim.
